Ministry--It's About Serving Others

At the Rock, we encourage everyone to be involved in ministry. What does that mean?

We aren't saying you need to go back to school and get a fancy degree in theology. Doing "ministry" is serving others. It's using your God-give talents and interests to reach out to people and make a difference in their lives. Watch video by Pastor Miles

That's it! Pretty simple, huh? No excuses! You can be a minister right now. Remember, Jesus said, If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all. Mark 9:35

If you're a part of the Rock A.R.M.Y., you need to take a serious look at your time and find a ministry to hook up with. At the Rock you can mentor a foster youth, use your talents in sports or the arts, serve in Sunday services, or build a home for a family in need. There are core ministries (such as Women's and High School), Sunday ministries (which take place mainly during Sunday services), Equipping ministries (meant to further equip the church body to live more like Christ), and Outreach ministries (meant to further extend the good news of Christ).

With 60+ ministries to choose from, there's something for everyone. Check out the possibilities online. View Rock Ministries. There are a lot of ministries that DO Something on a regular basis. How about you?

Perhaps you are serving in something other than a Rock ministry. That's okay too! The Rock Church is just one way God uses His children. Bottom line: We all need to be helping to change the world!

Thinking about Ministry

Couple of things to keep in mind as you serve in a ministry:

  • God has created us with a purpose and an eternal destiny. We are special to God, and to minister and serve others for Him is a special blessing.
  • It does not require recognition. "Serving the least of these" cannot necessarily increase our status, pay us back, or express gratitude. However serving should not be about the recognition we may or may not receive. Serving must be enough, in and of itself.
  • Ministry is not always planned and calculated. Ministry won't always follow our own personal schedules. It may feel "inconvenient" and come at the "wrong time." We must be open, ready and willing to serve the needs of others.
  • Serving in ministry provides help in everyday needs. Effective ministry doesn't require spectacular methods of serving. Serving is often very simple---giving of food, water, or spending time with someone.
  • Serving in ministry always brings eternal blessings. Ministry to others is ministry to Jesus Himself. Sometimes our most powerful encounter with Jesus is when we are in the act of helping someone else. Matthew 25:40 quotes Jesus saying, The King will reply, "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."

Thinking about Spiritual Gifts

Do you know what your spiritual gifts are?

You were created by God for a specific purpose. He has given you gifts to serve Him, your community, family, co-workers and church in a unique way. And, believe it or not, your gift is vital to the work of God in our church family---otherwise God would not have placed you here.

The Apostle Peter said, Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. (1 Peter 4:10

Consider how your own spiritual gifts can be maximized and find a place to let your light shine! How? By taking a simple spiritual gifts assessment on-line.

After taking the spiritual gifts test you will receive an email with your results, and a description of each gift, and its characteristics and challenges. Lastly, we'll include a few suggestions where at the Rock Church your gift could be put to good use. But please realize that the results of your gift assessment does not directly correlate to specific ministry you should serve in. You will find that almost every gift can be used in any ministry. People connect to ministries they have an interest or a passion in. What lights your fire?

Remember, ministry matters. Jesus said so. In Matthew 25:34-36, He describes a scene in heaven where He greets his followers. Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you form the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me.

Now go serve!
