The Spiritual Man

Miles McPherson - April 20, 2008

Our longing for spiritual fulfillment is the result of being separated from our Creator.

1. We all crave spiritual fulfillment or spiritual life because we were made in the image of God.

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. Genesis 2:7

When man was first created we were made as a physical being but we weren't alive until after God gave us the "breath of life"; our soul. You eat, drink and breathe because your body needs it. You know that if you fill your mind with garbage your mind will rot. But what do you do to feed your soul?

It is sometimes hard to see that our soul may be starving because we are using other things like trying to survive. But God has taken care of that too.

Romans 8:26 tells us that the Spirit makes intercession for us when we pray because we don't know what to pray for sometimes and God knows what our spirit needs to not just survive but to flourish.

2. Spiritual death or God alienation occurs when we sin.

Genesis 2:15-17 shows God creating and placing Adam, the first perfect man, in the garden of Eden. God instructs Adam that he is able to eat from any tree in the garden, except for the tree of knowledge of good and evil, because if he does he will die. However this is beyond a physical death. When Adam did take of the apple he was removed from the garden and from God… a spiritual death.

3. Satan deceives us to fulfill our spiritual longings with addictive poison.

Satan knows your weakness and will use it to separate you from God.

Genesis 3:5 says, For God knows that in the day you eat of it (the tree of knowledge) your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good from evil.

Pastor Miles pointed out that Satan was convincing Eve that she doesn't need God and he is telling us the same thing. It may not be with apples but with drugs, porn, TV… oh the list is endless but Satan knows your weakness and will use it to separate you from God.

4. Spiritual life comes from the Spirit of God.

Again in order to feed our spirit our Provider tells us to pray and seek His wisdom on how to care for our spirit. Pastor Miles pointed out that we will have everlasting life but it is up to us where; and there are only two choices.

5. Our need for spiritual fulfillment can only be truly satisfied through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Even Satan knows this. Our body can only be filled with good food; when we stuff it with junk we get unhealthy.

Our mind needs good activities or it turns to waste. Our soul is no different and needs the fulfillment from God as he knows what our spirits need. And though we can try to fill that need with other things it will only be a void leaving our soul sick and needy.
